VADOC Release Status Paths
The Virginia Department of Corrections operates state institutions and community corrections. A person with a Henrico conviction may be incarcerated at a VADOC institution outside the county, remain temporarily in a local or regional jail under state responsibility, leave prison on parole or probation, or reach discharge. A transfer between the Henrico jail and VADOC is continued custody, not community release.
A prison release can end incarceration while state supervision remains. Parole is conditional release under Virginia Parole Board authority for an eligible person. Probation is court-ordered supervision, often tied to a suspended sentence. Post-release supervision is another period of community control after confinement. Discharge means the specified correctional authority has ended. The VADOC locator and state records should be read with those distinctions in mind.

Search VADOC Henrico Releases
The official VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator covers state custody and community supervision. Search with at least the first three letters of the first name and the complete last name, or use the seven-digit DOC ID. Optional filters include location, race, sex, and age range. Accept the disclaimer, complete live verification, and compare identifiers carefully.
Use a dated, repeatable process so a state result is not confused with the local jail episode.
- Confirm that the sentence or transfer placed the person under VADOC authority.
- Search the name or seven-digit DOC ID and record every filter used.
- Read the displayed location, correctional status, and release-date label in context.
- If a community-corrections district appears, contact that district for releasable assignment confirmation.
- For an exact accomplished release or discharge, request the state record rather than relying only on the public locator.
VADOC says the locator updates daily but may be inaccurate or outdated. It is not a complete archive of every fully discharged person, and it does not cover an adult who bonded out of a Henrico jail case without state responsibility. Use the Henrico County release search when the controlling record is local.
VADOC Records and Contact
For a release record, identify the person, seven-digit DOC ID if known, date range, and the exact documents sought. Useful targets include actual release or discharge date and type, the release letter or order, current supervision status and office, and an identification photograph if releasable. Direct inmate information to the unit manager, warden or superintendent, or probation and parole chief holding the record, or ask the VADOC FOIA office to identify the custodian.

VADOC accepts requests by mail, fax, email, in person, and telephone, though a written request is preferred. Its FOIA guidance uses the Virginia five-workday response structure and possible seven-workday extension. Actual costs can apply. Ask for an estimate, and note that a deposit may be required when the estimate exceeds $200.
The state correctional file is distinct from a Virginia Parole Board decision report and from the Henrico Sheriff booking record. Request each from the office that created it. A responsive record may still contain redactions or withheld parts under Virginia law.
VADOC Release Date Meaning
A date displayed for an incarcerated person is future-facing. VADOC computes active state sentences using the governing credit regime, prior jail credit, sentence type, total active time, earning class, disciplinary events, and other calculations. Older Good Conduct Allowance rules and newer Earned Sentence Credit rules are not interchangeable. Credits do not simply reduce every sentence by one fixed percentage.
Virginia’s post-1994 framework is often described through the requirement that a person in specified categories serve at least about 85 percent, but eligibility and rate depend on the offense and law. Enumerated ESC-1 offenses can earn zero to 4.5 days per 30 served. Other eligible ESC-2 offenses can earn more at the highest level under Va. Code §53.1-202.3. No release date should be calculated from sentence length alone.
The VADOC time-computation page explains the state and local calculation boundary. Final release staff also review warrants, detainers, continued-custody orders, discipline that affects the date, and uncalculated sentences. A detainer is a hold or notice connected to another authority. Any of those facts can change where the person goes or when custody ends.
Note: A projected state release date is an estimate and must not be reported as an accomplished discharge.
VADOC Facility Release Process
VADOC’s published facility-release material separates preparation from the actual event. On release, the person signs the applicable Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole with a staff witness. The agency says discharge or parole release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the date, weather permitting. That is a state-facility rule, not a promise about Henrico Jail East or West.

The page helps identify the state process, but it does not prove that a named person completed release. The locator, signed release documents, and supervision assignment remain person-specific sources.
VADOC can issue advance notifications and a later actual-release notice. An anticipated event may be sent about 30 days ahead and can change. Once a person leaves VADOC incarceration, a probation or parole district may become the controlling state contact. A move into community supervision is release from prison, not the end of every sentence term.
No Henrico VADOC Prison
The official facilities directory did not identify a VADOC prison physically in Henrico County. That absence is important. “Henrico release” may refer to the court of conviction or home supervision district, not the prison gate. A person sentenced in Henrico can be held at a state institution elsewhere or remain temporarily in a local jail while awaiting state movement.
The proposed Henrico Sheriff budget describes state-responsible inmates as people sentenced on all Henrico charges to more than one year of felony time, while also noting that the local jails hold state prisoners, typically serving under one year. Commitment documents control. Sentence shorthand should not be used to decide who has custody.
After prison, District 32 Probation and Parole serves Henrico from Richmond. A locator result pointing to that office indicates a community-supervision path, not a county jail placement. If the locator instead shows another district, use the listed office. A fully discharged person may no longer yield a useful public result, so the state record request remains the archive path.

Reconcile Henrico State Records
Three records often describe different stages. The Henrico Sheriff entry can show when the person left the local jail and whether VADOC received the person. The VADOC record can show state placement, release, or supervision. The court order establishes the sentence and later judicial changes. None should be forced to answer another office’s question.
If the Henrico roster loses the name after a VADOC transfer, describe the event as transfer unless the record supports a community release. If the VADOC locator later shows District 32, imprisonment may have ended, but supervision can remain. If no current state result appears, ask for the actual release or discharge record and preserve the date of the negative lookup.
Federal and ICE custody remain separate. A state release to another authority is not necessarily a return to the community. Follow the receiving custodian named in the record, and use exact terms from the source rather than substituting “released” for every departure.
